Length isn't usually an issue for desktops, but may be for laptops.

I don't think there is anything nefarious ("industry agreement") going on.Īccording to PC Magazine, M.2 modules come in different physical lengths: 42mm, 60mm, and 80mm. QLC drives slow down a bunch if you fill them. I don't know if they are iMac compatible. They even offer a 8TB QLC M.2 NVMe drive. There seems to be some industry agreement not to produce larger consumer drives that Sabrent isn't following. There is only one company making >2TB M.2 SSDs: Sabrent. I have had Mac's since 1986 and failures or warranty issues have been nil not a concern what so ever.ītw I am not a she either if you were trying to be funny. I have four external 10TB SSD's and several 2TB SSD's I am fully aware of any and all of this and I have already opened and do not care when I installed 128GB of ram. I have reasons for wanting an internal 4TB end of story. If frequently writing large files (hundreds of mb or more) where time is money rather than a minor inconvenience then speed matters (although how much it matters is subjective) but its not like night and day unless you spend your days and nights copying large video files back and forth. She can decide what fantasies/hype about I/O to which she wishes to subscribe when purchasing external storage but given the size of most I/O tasks there may be little real world difference regardless of bus or flavor of storage-faster is always more desirable, particularly if someone else is paying for it.

Apple users do not have the opportunity Windows desktop users have to boot from a variety of internal media to see how little real little difference it makes once you get off mechanical drives despite large differences in Crystal Mark scores. There is no practical advantage to booting from external media given what the OP has already but to each her own. That is not the problem, however un-aesthetic, for a desktop that it can be for a laptop. If the machine belongs to her employer I doubt that would be a go outside of Apple warranty work.Īpple assumes that users understand the Apple design philosophy and are willing to rely on external storage-part of the Apple tax. The OP should review what it takes to open an iMac.

The nice thing is you could then use them with any new mac you get. And I don't know if the MacPros will drop either, but I guess I haven't been following some trend. I can't see the price dropping, but what do I know. The Apple 6k monitor is quite the bargain, actually, compared to reference monitors. Or if you can live with a bit slower, the Samsung T5. And you could carry along one with your Lr catalog and it would be plenty speedy. Both these drives are tiny and require no power cables. If you want merely fast, the new Samsung T7 rips along almost as fast, and comes in 2TB. Macsales and Plugable make super fast ones too. And you could add it without voiding your warranty on that 2019 or risking damaging it. Faster I believe than an internal non pcime regular old SSD. Gee maybe Apple will solve all my problems and just come out with a 32" 6k iMac?Ī Samsung X5 comes in a 2TB config, and runs over Thunderbolt 3 and is VERY fast.

I also do not want to have to use my lesser 16" MacBook Pro to drive it when it is not as fast or as capable as my iMac. What I want is the 6k monitor but not at that price nor willing to pay crazy money for MacPro when these will drop like a rock in a year. Rumor is they are completely redefining the iMac this year so I do not want to spend a bunch of money other than these two drives. It seems to me this will solve a lot of problems. I am also contemplating putting my photos ( will back up regularly both on and off site) so Lightroom works better when I travel an use my three different Macs in different places. I need ample space with headroom so the files reside locally so things work faster rather than having to retrieve files from the cloud. My 16" MacBook Pro has 4TB and my 27" iMac at work only has a 1TB SSD which is creating problems with iCloud sync and really slowing things down so I ordered a 4TB external for it.

Does anyone know the best or fastest 4TB SSD to replace the 2TB I have in my 2019 loaded up iMac?
